Barrocal and sierra

Algarve is subdivided into three large areas, each one with breathtaking landscape to see:

  • The coastline is the first of them, and is where most of the activity takes place in this Algarve. The seaside here is fairly diverse, and you will find some beaches with extensive stretches of fine sand, and others with coves, caves, and still others with lagoons and wetlands, or with rolling sand dunes.
  • The barrocal runs from the coastal fringe to the mountain foothills. The barrocal is where most of the agricultural activity happens in Algarve. Here the typical farming products are carob beans, almonds, figs, etc. It is also the area with many of the most interesting scenic spots, such as Pego do Inferno, and Mata da Conceiçao.
  • Lastly, the Sierra (Mountains) has lovely places to visit such as the Sierra de Monchique, where you will find the highest peak in Algarve, measuring about 900 meters in altitude.
